If you are a local business then it is important for you to optimise your website to be found in search engines by people looking for services or products like yours.
If you own, say, a café in Brighton then you want your business to show when people type in the relevant key terms such as ‘café in Brighton’ or ‘café near me’. As search engines become more sophisticated, using the terms ‘near me’ is becoming more popular. You should make sure that you employ both on and off-page SEO to make sure that search engines understand exactly where you are so that your business will rank for ‘near me’ searches. I’ve listed seven important tactics both on and off-page (directly on your website and elsewhere) to help your business rank locally.1. Keyword researchKeyword research is the foundation of SEO. Having an idea of what search terms people are going to enter into search engines is the basis for making sure they find your business. The good news is that keyword research for local businesses isn’t very complicated. For most businesses, your primary keywords will be obvious. To start off, it will be your type of business and your location. Let’s start with the key term “café in Brighton” and see what Google suggests.
This Google search returns a list of useful suggestions as to what people are currently searching for in relation to your keyword. If your café is by the seafront then it’s worth knowing that people specifically search for cafes down on the seafront - so you may want to use that key term. Another great keyword suggestion tool is Neil Patel’s Ubersuggest planner. This software will not only suggest search terms for you but it will also tell you how many monthly searches there are for that term. However, you only get 3 searches a day with the free version. The great thing about tools like this is that if you have very competitive keywords, Ubersuggest can help you find alternatives. This tool will tell you how competitive your keyword is and if it’s very high, you can find alternatives that won’t be so difficult to rank for. The best unlimited free tool that I have found is Google Ads. I know that sounds a bit terrifying if you don’t already use it. However, although you do have to enter your credit card details, you will not pay anything if you don’t have ads running. Google Ads has a great keyword planner that will also tell you how many monthly searches they are for your terms. Years ago, before I ran ads, I used the app just for keyword research.
